“I was the only person on my trip and therefore I was not provided with an English-speaking guide. I was travelling in a private vehicle and had a box to myself which was an advantage in terms of comfort but possibly detracted from the experience of meeting other travellers. My trip was scheduled to last 12 hours however it only lasted for nine. The trip was extremely expensive and I subsequently found out that I could have visited three villages for a…”

Lake Atitlan: Mayan Ceremony at the Sacred Caves

Lake Atitlan: Mayan Ceremony at the Sacred Caves - Panajachel to the caves, and why the trip sets the tone

14.Lake Atitlan: Mayan Ceremony at the Sacred Caves

★★★★★★★★★★4.8 · 37 reviews · 2 hours · from $108

Fire cleansing in Lake Atitlan sacred caves, with Mayan calendar lessons, Eagle Rock views, and a short hike to a 200-foot waterfall.

“Participating in the fire ceremony was definitely a highlight. The ride on the chicken bus, the short, steep hike to the caves, the view of the lake. Everything was beautiful. But the ceremony was what made it truly special. Alex, a touching, empathetic, open, lovable man, deeply rooted in his culture and community, guided us with sensitivity through the individual stages of the ceremony and allowed us to become part of the culture. This is not touristy nonsense, but living culture. I am truly grateful for this experience. One tip: take sturdy shoes and clothes that can get dirty. My summer dress was not the best option.”
